Since its inception in March 1990, the Washington Moroccan American Club (WMC) has grown to serve the Moroccan American community nationwide. Over the past 20 years, we have organized and strengthened our presence in the cultural, business, government, and even political sectors. The WMC's 20th Anniversary is a celebration for all of us as we look toward the future and embrace the next generation both here in the U.S. and in Morocco.

 The WMC is proud of its service to the Moroccan American community and its "golden goal" is to provide them with the finest events Morocco has to offer in the United States, its friend and ally since 1776.
         WMC also serves as a platform for bringing together Moroccan-Americans and friends of Morocco to share in events and campaigns that support strong bilateral Moroccan-US relations.
         For its 20th year goal, the WMC is committed to its continued growth based on its experiences and networking in the metro DC area and across the country. It strives to become a key resource for the Moroccan-American community nationally, and make a difference is the lives of its members and friends.
         Please join us in celebrating this important milestone in March 2010. The 20 events for the 20th calendar, showcasing different aspects of Moroccan social, economic, and cultural life is forthcoming.

The press conference to announce the commemoration of WMC took place at the Sheraton last night and was very successful. About 30 journalists, including the two Moroccan TV channels attended.  There were also some friends and members of WMC, such as Hassan  Khantach, Mohamed Hajjam, Mustapha  Chtaini, Kader Rhanime, Hassan Marrakchi and others, among the audience.  Hassan was the star of the show.  He was eloquent, precise, clear and to the point. 

His presentation was brilliant. He gave an overview of the creation of WMC, its objectives and activities. 

He then cited the different events and the reasons behind selecting the different themes. 

 There were many questions posed and some of them were tough, but the talented Hassan handled them with great tact and diplomacy.  Journalists asked about the role of the Moroccan community in lobbying for Morocco, the support of the Moroccan Embassy in DC, the relationship with the Ministry of Immigration

and the Council of the Moroccan Community abroad, the challenges facing new immigrants and the support provided to them by WMC to ensure them a smooth landing , the role of the Moroccan community in the Sahara conflict and other policies or decision made by the Moroccan government, such as regionalism,

Women empowerment, the involvement of the Moroccan community in the American politics and why not run for an office... etc.  Hassan was very clear, tactful and diplomatic in all his answers. It is a gift to be able to satisfy the curiosity of the people without being trapped or unintentionally offensive. 

 Hassan explained the complexity of being lobbyist. He said that it is a profession that has complicated rules and regulations to be respected. That it is tough for an association such as WMC to turn into a lobby firm.  Although he remarked that no other person could defend the interest of a country but its own citizens,

Hassan reminded the audience that "We are Americans from Moroccan Origins...we act and react to Moroccan issues as they come".  "We do what we could to influence the American decision makers ...by supporting their candidacies to different government offices, by helping them with their electoral campaigns...etc", he added.  Hassan then enumerated some of WMC achievements in this area, such as the organization of several sit-ins to support the Moroccanity of the Sahara and counter attack the Algerian maneuvers, the modest contribution to the liberation of the last Moroccan soldiers imprisoned for a quarter of a century in indouf, the Aminatou award and hanger strike... the petition to persuade Obama to speak in Morocco and so forth.

 Besides the social activities organized by WMC to keep the Moroccan community together and be aware of what is going on back home, Hassan highlighted the solidarity and generosity of this community and their American friends, such as Friends of Morocco..High Atlas Foundation, by helping their people back home as much as possible.

 The great attendance and the successful press conference which was announced and prepared in less than 48 hours is the best illustration of the interest Moroccans have in the activities of the Moroccan communities abroad and the need to multiply such initiatives that are supported and appreciated by all. 

It is also a clear indication of the success of WMC 20/20 event before it has even started.

Washington- Le Maire de la capitale américaine, Adrian Fenty, a salué le rôle du Washington Moroccan American Club (WMC), en tant que vecteur de rencontres et de rapprochement avec la communauté marocaine.
 

"Le WMC joue un rôle en tant que lieu de rencontre et de renforcement des liens entre les maroco-Américains et les Amis du Maroc", écrit M. Fenty dans un communiqué rendu public, mardi, à l'occasion du 20-ème anniversaire de cette organisation, basée à Washington.

Le WMC célèbre, tout au long du mois de mars, ses vingt années d'existence avec une série d'événements et de conférences en partenariat avec d'autres associations locales et nationales américaines, et plusieurs Instituts de recherche et universités de la capitale américaine.

Au programme de cet évènement, figurent aussi des rencontres à caractère académique, culturel et sportif, qui retracent l'action du WMC pour la promotion des liens de solidarité entre les membres de la communauté marocaine installée à Washington et sa région.

Le Washington Moroccan American Club célèbre ses 20 années d'existence
Washington, 01/03/10- Le Washington Moroccan American Club (WMC) célèbre, tout au long du mois de mars, ses vingt années d'existence, avec au programme une série d'événements et de conférences retraçant son action pour la promotion des liens de solidarité entre les membres de la communauté marocaine installée à Washington et sa région.

Le Club tiendra ainsi plusieurs événements à caractère académique, culturel et sportif, en partenariat avec d'autres associations locales et nationales US, et plusieurs Instituts de recherche et universités de la capitale américaine, comme la Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, John Hopkins University, l'Université de Georgetown et la George Washington University, selon un communiqué du WMC, parvenu lundi à la MAP.

Le programme comprendra ainsi l'organisation d'une conférence sur le thème de "la promotion des droits de la femme au Maroc", qui se tiendra le 17 mars au siège de Think tank américain Carnegie Endowment, visant à exposer l'impact des initiatives lancées par le Maroc en matière d'égalité homme-femme.

Une autre conférence sur la question de la langue amazigh, sera tenue le 19 mars à l'Université de George Washington, en partenariat avec l'Institut Royal de la Culture Amazigh (IRCAM), et verra la participation de linguistes et d'experts en la matière, ajoute la même source.

L'expérience du Corps américain de la paix au Maroc depuis 1963, sera également le thème d'un autre évènement qui sera organisé en collaboration avec l'association des Amis du Maroc (Friends of Morocco), une organisation jumelle du WMC, qui compte parmi ses membres d'anciens volontaires du Corps de la paix dans le Royaume.

La culture et la poésie marocaines seront aussi au menu du 20è anniversaire du Washington Moroccan American Club, avec l'organisation d'un "concourt de l'art et de la poésie" au profit des enfants des membres de la communauté marocaine, avec comme objectif de les initier à la littérature et à la poésie marocaines.

Le sport ne sera pas en reste, avec l'organisation d'un tournoi de football pour marquer le 20è anniversaire du WMC, créé au début en tant que club de football (le Washington Athletic Club). Le tournoi, qui verra la participation d'équipes venues de dix Etats américains, sera dédié à la mémoire de feu Hassan Mendoun, ancien footballeur et membre respecté de la communauté marocaine installée aux Etats-Unis

 تشمل حوالي 20 نشاطا تبرز دور النادي، ومهمته في مد الجسور بين المغاربة أنفسهم، وبين الأميركيين.

وقال حسن سمغوني، رئيس النادي، في تصريح لـ "المغربية"، إنها تظاهرة للاحتفال بالفضاء المغربي، الذي كان للنادي قدم السبق في خلقه، في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، من أجل مساعدة الجالية المغربية المقيمة بواشنطن والضواحي على الاندماج والتقرب أكثر من الآخر، إلى جانب الدور الذي يلعبه هذا النادي في إبراز الصورة المثالية للمغرب.

وأوضح سمغوني أن البداية كانت بتأسيس فريق لكرة القدم سنة 1988، سمي بـ "واشنطن أتليتيك كلوب" وهو اسم يحمل رمز الوداد البيضاوي (WAC) بحروفه الأولى، وعرف انخراطا للمغاربة المهاجرين من الجيل الأول، وسرعان ما كبرت الفكرة لتتحول إلى ناد لا يقتصر على الرياضة فقط، بل ليشمل عددا آخر من الجوانب الثقافية والاجتماعية.

وقدم رئيس نادي واشنطن المغربي الأميركي، فكرة عن الأنشطة والتظاهرات التي يقوم بها، طيلة السنة، مذكرا بأول مهرجان مغربي نظمه سنة 1992، شمل عددا من البرامج واللقاءات، بحضور سفراء المغرب السابقين في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، وعدد من الفنانين والرياضيين المغاربة، ما أعطى إشعاعا جديدا للوجود المغربي في واشنطن، أنذاك، ثم بمهرجان "المغرب الساحر" سنة 2004، الذي عرف مشاركة وازنة للمغاربة والأميركيين فاقت 3500 شخص، وجرى خلاله تنظيم زفاف حقيقي على الطريقة المغربية، أبرز الطابع التقليدي والتراثي للمملكة هناك.

ويساهم النادي في تكوين الأطفال وعدد من الشباب، عن طريق انضمامهم إلى فريق كرة القدم، بحيث يتمكنون من الحصول على منح دراسية من الجامعات الأميركية. وهكذا تمكن عدد من أطفال الجيل الأول الذين أصبحوا اليوم أطرا وأعضاء في النادي لهم مكانتهم المهنية والعلمية التي تجعل منهم مواطنين اميركيين من أصول مغربية يفتخرون بها" يوضح سمغوني، مشيرا إلى أن المنح تبلغ من 25 إلى 30 ألف دولار في السنة.

وكان النادي قدم، خلال ندوة صحفية عقدها بالدارالبيضاء، يوم الجمعة 29 يناير، الخطوط العريضة للتظاهرة التي ستشمل، طيلة شهر مارس بواشنطن، لقاءات ورحلات، وسهرات فنية، ومسابقات رياضية، إلى جانب ندوات فكرية وثقافية وفنية، تحتضنها رحاب الجامعات الأميركية، وكلها انشطة يؤطرها ويشرف عليها أساتذة مغاربة ويحضرها رجال أعمال وأطر مغربية. وستناقش الندوات العلاقات المغربية الأميركية.

ويشمل البرنامج عروضا في الطبخ المغربي، يقدمها سمير البريني، رئيس المعهد المغربي للطبخ بأميركا، فضلا عن ندوة حول "التنمية القروية بالمغرب" تنظمها جمعية الأطلس الكبير.

من برامج التظاهرة، أيضا، تنظيم مبادرة "حاويات الأمل" التي تهدف إلى جمع الملابس واللوازم المدرسية وتوزيعها على الأطفال المغاربة بهدف خلق التواصل بين أطفال الولايات المتحدة ونظرائهم المغاربة، علاوة على تنظيم مسابقة ثقافية وفنية مفتوحة في وجه الجيل الأول من المغاربة الأمريكيين.

من جهة أخرى، سيجري تكريم أصدقاء المغرب الأميركيين من العاملين في هيئة جناح السلام الأميركية.
وستنطلق، يوم 22 مارس، رحلة نحو المغرب، تضم 110 طلبة ينتمون إلى جامعة جورج مايسن وجامعة نيويورك، حيث سيعقدون لقاءات مع طلبة مغاربة تحت إشراف وتأطير جامعيين مغاربة مقيمين بالولايات المتحدة.

وسيعقد في الإطار نفسه يوم 25 مارس المقبل لقاء لفائدة الجالية المغربية المقيمة بالولايات المتحدة، من أجل شرح مضامين الخطاب الملكي السامي حول الجهوية الموسعة، إضافة إلى ندوة حول الإعلام المغربي.

وستكون الرياضة حاضرة من خلال تنظيم دوري في كرة القدم تشارك فيه فرق مغربية مقيمة بالولايات المتحدة، تكريما للراحل حسن مندون (حارس سابق لفريق الرجاء البيضاوي)، ومن خلال سباق الشباب المغربي الأميركي، داخل القاعة، تحت إشراف البطلة المغربية نزهة بيدوان

 تحركت الجالية المغربية المقيمة بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية لحشد الدعم لمقترح الحكم الذاتي بالأقاليم الصحراوية عبر تنظيم يوم حول الثقافة الصحراوية وآخر يشرح مضامين الخطاب الملكي الأخير حول الجهوية الموسعة بالعاصمة واشنطن موجه للأمريكيين. نادي واشنطن المغربي الأمريكي، الذي يرأسه حسن السمغوني، ينظم بشراكة مع الوزارة المكلفة بالجالية المغربية المقيمة بالخارج والمجلس الأعلى للجالية 20 تظاهرة في خدمة مغاربة أمريكا احتفالا بمرور 20 سنة عن خلق النادي.
وتتوزع الأنشطة، التي سيتم افتتاحها يوم فاتح مارس المقبل بواشنطن من طرف عمدة العاصمة، بندوة في جامعة «جورج مايسن» يؤطرها دكاترة وأساتذة جامعيون مغاربة حول موضوع تسهيل ولوج الجامعات والمعاهد الأمريكية في وجه الطبلة المغاربة الجدد بتأطير من «بيت الأكاديميين المغاربة الأمريكيين في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية»، وستتلوها ندوة يوم خامس مارس حول العلاقات المغربية الأمريكية في جامعة «جورج تاون» ويحتضنها المركز المغربي الأمريكي. وسينظم معهد الإرث الأمريكي في طنجة ندوة حول المتحف الوحيد الذي تمتلكه الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية خارج ترابها، كما سيتم تنظيم لقاء حول حوار الديانات بجامعة جورج مايسن.
وستنطلق رحلة طلابية يوم 22 مارس، تضم 110 طلاب يمثلون جورج مايسن وجامعة نيويورك، إلى المغرب لعقد لقاءات مع طلبة مغاربة بإشراف وتأطير من أساتذة مغاربة جامعيين مقيمين بأمريكا.
كما تتميز تظاهرة «20 سنة 20 تظاهرة في خدمة الجالية» بتنظيم يوم حول الإعلام المغربي في الخامس والعشرين من مارس المقبل وحفل للاختتام بتنظيم سهرة فنية كبرى تتضمن أنواعا غنائية مختلفة.
ويعتبر «نادي واشنطن» من أقدم المنظمات المغربية التي أنشئت في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، وعمل على ربط علاقات متينة مع الإدارات والمنظمات الأمريكية التي

تهتم بالشأن المغربي.

 قال حسن سمغوني الرئيس المؤسس لنادي"واشنطن المغربي الأمريكي" أن الغاية المتوخاة من تنظيم عشرين تظاهرة فكرية وثقافية وفنية ورياضية لفائدة الجالية المغربية المقيمة بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية هو التعريف بمؤهلات المغرب، وبغنى موروثه الحضاري والثقافي، وكذا توطيد أصرة العلاقة بين الجالية المغربية بأمريكا وبين موطنهم الأصلي بالمغرب، خصوصا عند الأطفال والشباب، مؤكدا في الاتصال ذاته أن قضية الوحدة التربية للمملكة ستكون حاضرة بقوة طيلة أيام التظاهرة.

 وأضاف سمغوني في اتصال هاتفي مع جريدة «رسالة الأمة» عقب الإعلان الجمعة الماضي بالدار البيضاء عن تنظيم عشرين تظاهرة تجمع بين الفكر والثقافة من جهة، وبين الفن والرياضة من جهة ثانية، بأن التظاهرات المبرمجة طيلة شهر مارس المقبل هي مناسبة للجالية المغربية لتأكيد حضورها الفعال والبارز على  الساحة الأمريكية، عبر تسطير العديد من الأنشطة و اللقاءات والندوات والسهرات والمباريات الرياضية، تصب كلها في منحى ربط علاقات متينة وقوية مع الإدارات والمنظمات الأمريكية التي تهتم بالشأن المغربي.

وأشار سمغوني في الاتصال ذاته على أن التظاهرة في كل أنشطتها ستركز على أبناء الجالية المغربية خاصة الشباب و الأطفال لأجل زرع محبة الوطن لديهم، وجعلهم صلة وصل وثيقة  مع الأصل.

وأكد الرئيس المؤسس ل"نادي واشنطن المغربي الأمريكي" أن القضية الوطنية للوحدة الترابية ستكون حاضرة وبقوة طيلة أيام التظاهرة،وحتى  بعدها، وقال في هذا الصدد لـ «رسالة الأمة» سنعرف بقضيتنا الوطنية لدى أصدقائنا الأمريكيين، وسنعمل على تأكيد مغربية الصحراء عبر كل الأنشطة واللقاءات سواء طيلة شهر مارس عبر تلك التظاهرات، أو حتى بعدها ستكون قضية وحدتنا الترابية حاضرة وبقوة».

وعن فكرة تنظيم تلك التظاهرة، أوضح سمغوني بأن فكرة لم تكن وليدة اللحظة، وإنما هي ثمرة اشتغال دامت لأكثر من 20سنة. وقال : «التظاهرة هي نتاج عمل ذؤوب استمر زهاء عشرين سنة، أي منذ أن كنا 2000 فردا بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، ونحن نشتغل ونسهم في التعريف بمؤهلات بلدنا  وبمخزونه الثقافي والحضاري العريق، حتى وصلنا اليوم إلى أكثر من150 ألفا مقيم بأمريكا، ولازلنا نبحث عن توطيد العلاقة أكثر مع أصدقائنا في الإدارات والمنظمات الأمريكية المهتمة بالشأن المغربي.

وعبر سمغوني عن سعادته بتنظيم هذه التظاهرة، وخاصة -  يضيف سمغوني- وأن عمدة واشنطن سيجعل من شهر مارس بالعاصمة الأمريكية واشنطن شهرا مغربيا بامتياز.

وحسب سمغوني فبرنامج هذه التظاهرة يشمل العديد من الأنشطة واللقاءات والسهرات من أبرزها عقد ندوة حول «التنمية القروية بالمغرب، وتنظيم مبادرة "حاويات الأمل" المتعلقة بجمع تبرعات من ملابس ولوازم مدرسية من أطفال مغاربة و أمريكيين لفائدة الأطفال المغاربة المعوزين، وكذلك ندوة حول العلاقات المغربية الأمريكية، علاوة عن ندوات أخرى حول الأمازيغية، والجهوية الموسعة، كما ستعرف التظاهرة رحلات طلابية لأكثر من 100 طالب أمريكي إلى المغرب وذلك لترسيخ القيم والخصوصيات المغربية في أذهان المستفيدين من هذه الرحلات.

وجدير بالذكر بأن التظاهرة التي ينظمه نادي واشنطن المغربي  طيلة شهر مارس هي بشراكة مع الوزارة المكلفة بالجالية المغربية المقيمة بالخارج والمجلس الأعلى للجالية.

الذكرى ال`20 لإنشائه، عشرين تظاهرة لفائدة الجالية المغربية المقيمة بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، وذلك طيلة شهر مارس المقبل، تشمل عقد ندوات فكرية وثقافية وتنظيم لقاءات ورحلات وسهرات فنية ومسابقات رياضية.

وأوضح السيد حسن سمغوني الرئيس المؤسس للنادي، خلال لقاء صحافي عقد مساء اليوم الجمعة بالدار البيضاء لتسليط الضوء على هذه التظاهرة، أن هذه الأخيرة، التي سيفتتحها عمدة واشنطن يوم فاتح مارس المقبل بالعاصمة الأمريكية، ستتميز يوم رابع مارس المقبل بعقد ندوة بجامعة (جورج مايسن) يؤطرها دكاترة وأساتذة جامعيون مغاربة حول موضوع "تسهيل ولوج الجامعات والمعاهد الأمريكية في وجه الطلبة المغاربة الجدد".

وأضاف السيد سمغوني أن هذه التظاهرة، التي ستنظم بشراكة مع الوزارة المكلفة بالجالية المغربية بالخارج والمجلس الأعلى للجالية، يشمل برنامجها يوم خامس مارس المقبل عقد ندوة حول "العلاقات المغربية الأمريكية" بجامعة جورج تاون، علاوة على ندوة أخرى يوم تاسع مارس بمبادرة من معهد الإرث الأمريكي (طاليم) في طنجة، يتم الحديث فيها عن دور هذا المتحف كمركز للأبحاث وكفضاء للأنشطة الجمعوية والثقافية.

ويشمل برنامج هذه التظاهرة، في 11 مارس، عروضا في الطبخ المغربي يقدمها سمير البريني رئيس المعهد المغربي للطبخ بأمريكا.

أما يوم 12 مارس، فستعقد ندوة حول "التنمية القروية بالمغرب" تؤطرها جمعية الأطلس الكبير، علاوة على تنظيم مسابقة ثقافية وفنية مفتوحة في وجه الجيل الأول من المغاربة الأمريكيين وذلك يوم 13 مارس.

وسيتم يوم 14 مارس تنظيم مبادرة (حاويات الأمل) المتعلقة بجمع تبرعات من ملابس ولوازم مدرسية من أطفال مغاربة وأمريكيين لفائدة الأطفال المغاربة من أجل مد جسور التواصل بين أطفال الولايات المتحدة ونظرائهم المغاربة.

وسيتم في 15 مارس تكريم أصدقاء المغرب الأمريكيين من العاملين في هيئة جناح السلام الأمريكية، فضلا عن عرض فيلم مغربي وعقد ندوة حول "المغرب وصناعة السينما"، وأخرى يوم 17 مارس حول "تقييم الدعم المقدم للمرأة المغربية ومدونة الأسرة".

وسينظم النادي يوم 19 مارس ندوة حول الأمازيغية يليها عرض فيلم أمازيغي، علاوة على عقد يوم خاص بالثقافة الصحراوية في 20 مارس، تليه يوم 21 مارس ندوة حول الديانات بجامعة جورج مايسن.

وفي الشق الرياضي، سينظم يومي 26 و27 مارس دوري في كرة القدم تشارك فيه فرق مغربية مقيمة بالولايات المتحدة تكريما للراحل حسن مندون (حارس سابق لفريق الرجاء البيضاوي)، إضافة إلى سباق الشباب المغربي الأمريكي داخل القاعة تشرف عليه البطلة نزهة بيدوان.

وستختتم هذه التظاهرة بتنظيم سهرة فنية كبرى تشمل ألوانا غنائية مختلفة.

وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن (نادي واشنطن المغربي الأمريكي)، الذي أسس سنة 1990، يعمل على ربط علاقات متينة مع الإدارات والمنظمات الأمريكية التي تهتم بالشأن المغربي من خلال تعريفها بالمغرب وتاريخه ومؤهلاته، كما ينظم النادي رحلات دراسية لترسيخ القيم والخصوصيات المغربية في أذهان المستفيدين من هذه الرحلات وفي سياق متصل، أبرز السيد سمغوني أن الذكرى العشرين لإنشاء هذا النادي، والتي ينظم بمناسبتها هذه

التظاهرة، تشكل فرصة لتقييم حصيلة عمل النادي وتحديداستراتيجية عمله في المستقبل

أعلن حسن السمغوني، رئيس نادي واشنطن المغربي الأميركي، أن هذا النادي، الذي استطاع تعبئة الرأي الأميركي، في إطار حركة "أطلقوا سراحهم الآن"، التي مكنت من إطلاق سراح 402 مغربي من معتقلات تندوف سنة 2005..

خرط، حاليا، في جمعية "إر إف كي" الأميركية، بكامل العضوية، من أجل التصويت أو الاعتراض على أي جائزة لا تستحق، سواء في حقوق الإنسان أو غيرها من المجالات.

وبعد تطرقه للمجهودات الدبلوماسية الموازية، التي ينشط فيها النادي، كفاعل في مسارات تعبئة الرأي العام الأميركي والجالية المغربية حول الدفاع عن مغربية الصحراء، أفاد السمغوني، في لقاء صحفي، نظم الجمعة الماضي بالدارالبيضاء، أن النادي سينظم، بشراكة مع الوزارة المكلفة بالجالية المغربية بالخارج، والمجلس الأعلى للجالية، أنشطة مكتفة خلال شهر مارس، بمناسبة مرور 20 سنة على تأسيسه، تحت شعار "20 سنة: 20 تظاهرة في خدمة الجالية". وأضاف أن هذه التظاهرة ستفتتح من قبل عمدة واشنطن، بداية من فاتح مارس، وتتضمن ندوات في جامعتي جورج ميسن وجورج تاون، وندوات حول مواضيع تهم الثقافة الصحراوية، والأمازيغية، ولقاء لفائدة الجالية المغربية بأميركا، لشرح مضامين الخطاب الملكي حول موضوع الجهوية الموسعة. كما سيعمل النادي على تنظيم مبادرات تطوعية لفائدة الأطفال المغاربة.

يذكر أن "نادي واشنطن المغربي الأميركي" عمل على ربط علاقات مع الإدارات الأميركية، التي تهتم بالشأن المغربي، من خلال التعريف بالمغرب ومؤهلاته، وتنظيم تظاهرات، ورحلات دراسية، ترسخ قيم وخصوصيات المغرب في أذهان الأميركيين.

وحصل حسن السمغوني، سنة 1995، على وسام الاستحقاق الوطني من طرف المغفور له الملك الحسن الثاني، وتسلم مفتاح مدينة نيوجرزي الأميركية من طرف عمدتها، نظير أنشطته الثقافية والجمعوي

On May 19, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Morocco pleaded guilty to funneling money and material support to al-Qaeda. Many Moroccan-Americans living in Washington, D.C. are outraged that Khalid Ouazzani would align himself with a terrorist group and cast a shadow over hard-working Moroccan and Muslim-Americans.

It's time to highlight a positive example of a Moroccan-American activist who has captured the attention and respect of leaders in Washington and Morocco for over two decades. Since first arriving in the Washington area, Hassan Samrhouni has operated as a goodwill ambassador between the U.S. and Morocco. Hassan is president and founder of the Washington Moroccan Club, and CEO of Casablanca Travel and Tours, a full-service travel agency with offices in Casablanca, Morocco and D.C.

Hassan has worked for 20 years to promote the interests of Moroccan-Americans and to create a bridge for relations between the two countries. His overriding goal has been to "explain Morocco to Americans"and help newcomers acclimate to American society. "We Moroccans are some of the best [examples of] Americans today," he said in an interview. "We are Muslim, Arab and African: people with three different diverse traits, and we can be ambassadors for the U.S. around the world."

Hassan is called upon regularly as an "ambassador of goodwill" between the countries. He personally met with Presidents Clinton and Bush Sr., Hillary Clinton and secretaries of state during visits of American delegations to Morocco. King Hassan II of Morocco recognized Hassan's efforts by awarding him the highest honor a Moroccan citizen can receive--the Wissam of National Merit--in 1995.

Before emigrating to the U.S. in 1982, Hassan traveled the world for 15 years, playing soccer for Morocco's wildly popular national team. He joined Wydad Athletic Club in 1966 at age 16, and was deeply imprinted by the club's leadership and influence in Morocco. Established in the 1930s, the club was a pivotal force in the drive for Morocco's independence in 1956, and operated not only as a sports organization but also as impetus for social and cultural change. Wydad ("Love") remains influential in Morocco and was Hassan's inspiration for creating a similar organization here.

Hassan founded a "football" (soccer) club here in Washington, D.C., hoping to transfer the same values of leadership and community development. "I created the Washington Moroccan Club, a community organization, with the same principles of that group of fighters who defined Morocco's independence. Here we defend our culture and place in both American and Moroccan societies." Washington Athletic Club, an extension of the Moroccan Club, competes in the Washington International Soccer League and has a 10-year roster of more than 150 licensed players.

King Hassan II's son, King Mohammed VI, is supportive of Hassan Samrhouni's efforts to assist Moroccans and Americans in both countries. Hassan often voices opinions on political and policy issues in his native country. Affectionately known as "Blue Eyes" back home, Hassan is approachable, modest and friendly. His dual passion for Morocco and the U.S. is evident both in conversation and in how he spends his time.

In March 2010, Hassan's 20 years of leadership in the Washington area culminated in an anniversary celebration and event series attended by many professionals from Morocco and the U.S.: D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, educators and students, journalists, university professors, representatives from think tanks and development organizations, musicians and artists, and, according to Hassan, "Many strong Moroccan and American women--they ran the event!" George Washington, George Mason, Georgetown and Johns Hopkins universities also participated, as did the World Bank. The event will soon evolve into a "caravan," traveling to major U.S. cities with the same plan but on a grander scale.

Hassan and the WMC target both newcomers to the U.S. and established Americans who emigrated from Morocco a generation or two ago. "As Moroccan-Americans move from the service sector to higher education and positions of leadership, we are trying to reach key decision-makers, "Hassan said. The club sponsored political fundraising efforts for both presidential candidates in 2008, and encourages participation in government, with the aim to one day elect a Moroccan-American to higher office.

Hassan loves promoting Morocco and America as a job. "We try to empower our community and teach them they can do anything." This involves assisting and inspiring newcomers to the U.S. "When I spend time talking with someone," he said, "I never ever feel that I am wasting my time. I often see the positive results of a conversation 10 years later, and I know that seeds are planted along the way."

La culture amazighe à l'honneur lors d'une rencontre à Washington
Washington, 19/03/10 - La culture et la langue amazighes ont été mises en exergue, vendredi, à Washington lors d'une rencontre organisée dans le cadre des activités célébrant le 20-ème anniversaire du Washington Moroccan Club.

Le but de cette rencontre est de promouvoir la culture amazighe à l'étranger et surtout de montrer ce que le Maroc a entrepris dans le domaine de la promotion de la langue et de la culture amazighes, a indiqué le recteur de l'Institut Royal de la Culture Amazighe (IRCAM), M. Ahmed Boukous.

Il est important, a affirmé M. Boukous, de promouvoir à l'étranger ce qui a été réalisé au niveau de l'aménagement de la langue amazighe, en matière d'enseignement de la langue ainsi que de recherche scientifique sur la société, les coutumes, les traditions, la littérature et les expressions artistiques.

"Il y a un travail très important qui a été réalisé depuis la création de l'IRCAM et qui gagnerait à être connu au niveau national et international également", a-t-il ajouté.

Evoquant la question de l'enseignement de l'amazighe au Maroc, M. Boukous a relevé qu'il s'agit d'une expérience "très originale qui n'a pas son pareil au niveau international en matière de revitalisation de la langue et de la culture amazighe".

Il est important de souligner que le Maroc s'est engagé dans un processus démocratique, notamment dans le domaine culturel, a-t-il dit, estimant que le Royaume représente un modèle aux niveaux du Maghreb et international.

"Il n'y a aucun pays où les langues nationales soient autant reconnues et promues que dans le Maroc", a fait valoir M. Boukous.

Dans d'autres pays, "les langues nationales dites régionales ou minoritaires n'ont quasiment aucun statut et n'ont aucune place dans l'enseignement, ni dans les médias", souligne-t-il, rappelant au passage le lancement d'une chaine de télévision d'expression amazighe au Maroc, "un acquis extrêmement important et dont l'équivalent n'existe pas dans nombre de pays".

Le Maroc, poursuit-il, s'est distingué dans le domaine de la gestion de la diversité linguistique culturelle et est en parfait accord avec les conventions internationales, notamment la convention de l'UNESCO de 2005 sur la protection de la diversité culturelle.

La rencontre a connu des interventions de chercheurs de l'IRCAM, dont Fatima Agnaou, Khalid Ansar, Fatima Sadiqi, Ahmed Chaabihi, Mustapha Jlok, Belaid Akkaf qui ont mis en lumière les travaux réalisés et ceux qui sont en cours de réalisation dans les domaines spécifiques aux différents centres de recherche qui composent cet institut.

Des universitaires et chercheurs marocains installés aux Etats-Unis tels Abdelaziz Abassi, Driss Benmhend et Hamid Kachmar ont également été parmi les panelistes de cette rencontre.

Les interventions ont porté sur différents thèmes dont "la question amazighe au Maroc", "l'enseignement de l'amazighe au Maroc: un défi constant", "le passage de l'oral à la littérature écrite amazighe et à la traduction", ainsi que sur les aspects de l'art et la musique amazighes.
